How did it all get started?

Originally we all knew each other through the Arizona Meet-Up thread on DoA (Den of Angels). In 2008 we became a very active group with new people showing up everyday, and with that a lot of people began to chat in the Meet-Up thread on DoA. Since chat was forbidden (unless it was related to the Meet-Up), we couldn’t talk freely without the risk of the thread being locked.

A forum was then created by Amiko and Izarra (Jellie on AZBJD) for the sole reason of chatting, discussing and creating new meet-up ideas, finding new and old friends, sharing photos amongst the Arizona people, etc. The forum was originally hosted on InvisionFree Forums, but after a year and nearly at 100 members on InvisionFree, the forum was then moved to it’s own server.

—

Who are we?

We are a fast growing community in the State of Arizona who are interested in the hobby and art of Asian Ball Jointed Dolls.

What do you do?

The community usually hosts a meet-up once a month in various locations. People who would like to host a meet-up is welcomed to start a thread up to gather general interest and ideas for locations. Sometimes we schedule meet-ups around large events like local conventions, cultural festivals, and the like. We usually have end of the year Meet-Up Parties – they usually revolve around Halloween and Christmas and RSVP’s have to be made for them.

What is a BJD?

A [a]BJD is a Asian Ball Jointed Doll (BJD for short). They are anatomically correct or genderless. They range from sizes 15cm all the way to 80cm. They have “ball” joints where their shoulders, elbows, wrists, sometimes waist, thigh, knees, and feet are (SOOM, a BJD company, is the only known company to make Ball Jointed Hands where each finger has it’s own joint for exceptional posability). BJD’s are highly posable, and are very customizable. They are made from Resin, sometimes French Resin, sometimes Polyurethane Resin, and Vinyl. They are held together with elastic, or a “skeleton” – what Dollfie Dreams are held together with (please refer to the company VOLKS who make and sell Dollfie Dreams). Hands, feet, and the doll heads hold the entire doll together by S-Hooks or “Loop Screws” (screws that are screwed into each foot/hand with a loop at the top, the elastic is then either threaded through or looped through to hold them in place).

Doll prices vary from company to sculpt, prices can range anywhere from $100 to the thousands.

But I own Pullips and Dalls, can I still join?

YES! Pullips and Dalls are still considered to be part of the Asian Ball Jointed Hobby (just no Ball Joints). We will not single you out for owning a Pullip or Dall! You are free to join and join in with the other aBJD hobbyists.

The most widely known website for BJD owners is the forum called Den of Angels. It hosts users from around the world who participate and chat about BJD’s avidly everyday!

P.S. You must sign up for DoA to view certain forum areas (basically the whole forum).
